At Colebourne our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic) curriculum is embedded into the school curriculum as well as weekly PSHE lessons. There are many occasions where we support children’s development in this area and in the wider understanding of British Society and tolerance and respect for the diverse city and country that we live in, along with how to build and sustain positive relationships and healthy lifestyles.
We incorporate the DFE guidance around Relationship Education, Relationships and Sex Educations (RSE) and Health Education into our PSHE work and in other subjects such as Computing and Science
As a school we aim to be extremely transparent in what we teach
Examples of how we do this include:
- Use of books about families and how to care for each other
- Mental well being – exploring feeling and emotions and how these can be accepted and dealt with
- Internet safety and harms
- Physical health and fitness
- Healthy eating
- Drugs, alchohol and tobacco
- Health and Prevention – incl sun safety, weight, sleep, personal hygiene
- Basic First Aid
- Changing adolescent body
We also cover wider aspects of health education and relationships education to ensure children are equipped for the world around them. We do this in a number of ways including:
- Close links with Beaufort School (Colocated building and regular buddy activities)
- Enterprise activities throughout the year and specifically for Christmas and Summer Fairs
- Assemblies, visits and visitors
- Science curriculum lessons specifically for year 5 and 6 covering pubery and human reproduction.
Governors have to “ensure that they and the school promote tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths (or those of no faith), races, genders, ages, disability and sexual orientations (and other groups with protected characteristics[1]) and support and help, through their words, actions and influence within the school and more widely in the community, to prepare children and young people positively for life in modern Britain” (OFSTED)
We will do this by carefully considering what we cover in regards to the needs of our pupils and the community we serve. All that we teach will have a backdrop of building understanding about differences and ensuring that those who are different are not discriminated against or treated any differently in school, while accepting that people have different views and values.
If you have any questions about any aspect of our PSHE curriculum please contact the school office and they will ensure you are put in touch with the correct person to deal with your enquiry.
